Blue Guitar
Picasso Tribute by Richard Siegel

Blue Guitarist is a tribute to Picasso’s Old Man. This hand painted tile is part of a project using techniques from the 18th century in Spain. A wonderful piece done by the artist this last spring using techniques from the 18th century. Only primitive metals were used to create this as this was all that was available in that century. From a series of tiles done using 18th century techniques and glazing’s.

I picked this particular image because the colors from the original Picasso are well represented in what was available for tile work in the 18th century. The use of real metals for coloring over a white base of enamel allows for an expression all its’ own. Looking closely at the face from the original it was a real treat to lay enough cobalt to make a face appear with the proper shading and effects. It gives it all the depth and detail while working with primitive materials.

Creating from a master work

Working on to the cloths, which were really just a wrap of material, becomes important as the shadows and folds had to be done with a delicate touch, making sure the metals rose and fell with the curves and shadows. It was specially difficult to match up the tattered shoulder and get the cobalt to melt to show similar work as done by Picasso.

The background of mainly green had to be accomplished with the proper shadows and depth because the overdose of copper bakes out a silver color. While it is accomplished by too much metal on the enamel it can be used to give definitions, as a cloud so to speak, or the texture of wood in the window opening.

The guitar was strictly magnesium and the application of it was important to bring out the various textures that a guitar demands.
